they don’t have to.

The Clarity Green Fortress Program

70% of Australian children experience bullying. Most kids know they should stand up for themselves — but fear stops them. We give children the skills, the mindset, and the rules to handle conflict without becoming the problem themselves.

Why Green Fortress

Built differently
from the start

Most martial arts programs teach children to strike. Green Fortress doesn’t. Our entire approach is built on non-violent self-defence — and that difference matters more than you might think.

70%

of Australian children experienced bullying in the last year

Source: Australian Government research. The fear of physical harm stops most victims from standing up for themselves — even when they want to. The solution isn’t to make them tougher. It’s to give them the tools and the confidence to act without fear.

No punching. No kicking. Ever.

We deliberately don’t teach strikes. Teaching a child to punch often creates more problems than it solves. Instead we teach leverage-based control — how to neutralise a threat and hold it without causing harm.

Verbal skills come first

Physical techniques are the last resort. We teach children how to de-escalate verbally, assert themselves confidently, and follow the Three T-steps — Talk, Tell, Tackle — before any physical response.

Separated by age and experience

Green Fortress is one of the only kids programs that separates children by both age and experience level — so every child gets the right balance of fun and challenge, not just a one-size-fits-all class.

Rules of engagement, not just techniques

Teaching self-defence without context is irresponsible. Every child in Green Fortress learns the five rules of when they can and cannot use what they’ve learned — so skills are never misused.

From Parents

What families
are saying

My two boys, 6 and 8, absolutely love their time with Mark. He’s so caring, yet professional and disciplined in his teaching — encouraging them to improve their technique while making sure they’re still having fun. He’s created a wonderfully balanced environment for newbies and those with more experience.

— Parent of two students, ages 6 & 8

A really kid-friendly environment to learn real BJJ fundamentals. Coach Mark is patient and empowers kids to learn, understand, and implement good behaviours. My son is really enjoying it and his confidence has grown in just a matter of months.

The Rules of Engagement

When to act.
How to act.

Every Green Fortress class reinforces these five rules. Children don’t just memorise them — they understand why each one exists. We recommend talking through them at home too, so your child knows they have your support.

1
Avoid the fight at all costs

De-escalation and walking away is always the first and best option.

2
If physically attacked, defend yourself

If avoidance fails and a threat becomes physical, your child has the right and the skills to protect themselves.

3
If verbally attacked, follow the Three T-steps

Talk — address it calmly. Tell — report it to a trusted adult. Tackle — only if the situation escalates physically.

4
Never punch or kick — establish control and negotiate

Strikes escalate situations. Control holds allow your child to neutralise a threat while keeping the door open for resolution.

5
When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate

The goal is always to resolve — not to win. Minimum force, maximum composure.

Talking through these rules at home reinforces them powerfully — and lets your child know you have their back if they ever need to use them.

The Programs

Which program is right
for your child?

All children start in the entry-level program for their age group. As they grow in maturity and skill, they progress to the next level — always at the right pace for them.

Ages 4–8

Kids · Confident Cornerstones

Designed for younger children, Confident Cornerstones teaches foundational self-defence through Jiu Jitsu games — structured, playful, and genuinely fun. Kids learn key principles of leverage and control without realising how much they’re absorbing. Once they’ve mastered the core games, they graduate to Steadfast Strongholds.

Ages 9–15

Juniors · Steadfast Strongholds

For older children, Steadfast Strongholds builds on the foundations with more structured non-aggressive self-defence — including verbal assertiveness and the “neutralise and negotiate” framework for handling bullies. No prior experience required. Most children notice a genuine boost in confidence within just a few weeks.

Clarity Character Development Program

Our coaches build genuine bonds with every child on the mat. We use that connection deliberately — to help develop character alongside physical skills. The program runs through six chapters over the year, each reinforced in every class through discussion and a unique point-based reward system.

Clarity Game Day

Children who earn enough points during each chapter are invited to a special two-hour party — games, fun, and celebration with all the kids and coaches. Parents have been known to put on a uniform just to join in.
