I have completely fallen in love with BJJ at Clarity. Mark is such a dedicated and patient coach! He has created a community and environment where I feel comfortable and quite unstoppable. Training has helped to grow my confidence, eliminate feelings of powerlessness (and recurring nightmares), stay fit, stay connected to community, and to challenge and stimulate my mind and body. Also since practicing yoga at Clarity I have gained more patience and mobility that assists me in my bjj training and beyond. Yogi Rachel is so intuitive, supportive and vibrant and I always feel so amazing after her classes! I 100% recommend Clarity to everyone at any age or level and highly recommend the bjj and yoga combo.

My time at Clarity Jiu Jitsu has been transformative. In just months, I fell in love with BJJ, improved my physical and mental health, and joined the Clarity family – a group of inspiring individuals. Despite my initial anxiety, the guidance from Head Coach Mark and the amazing support of my teammates made me feel at home on the mats. Clarity also offers yoga classes that complement BJJ training nicely, and have worked wonders for my practice of mindfulness.

Mark and his academy Clarity have given us an exciting new passion (BJJ). At 46 I never thought I’d be getting back into martial arts. However with Mark’s expert tuition and enthusiasm, the journey so far has been incredible. I can highly recommend Mark and Clarity to anyone keen to try the sport of BJJ.

I’d been interested in BJJ for quite a while when a friend suggested we try a session at Clarity. From the moment Coach Mark began to explain his philosophies I knew we were in the right place. His passion for not only Jiu Jitsu but also teaching radiated around the mat. The difference Clarity has made in my life is significant. Having been training now for 18 months, I’m fitter than ever, I’ve lost 13kg and my mental health is in a great place! I’ve suffered from anxiety my whole life and I’ve found Jiu Jitsu has really helped me to focus and stay calm. Through Coach Mark’s leadership, Clarity is a welcoming & safe space full of encouragement. Mark has given me such a passion and respect for Jiu Jitsu that I decided to see if my kids would like it. Mark is extremely patient and teaches the kids with a lot of fun drills and just the right amount of firmness. In fact the drills look so fun I asked for them to be in the adult classes as well. My only wish is that I’d started sooner!

FAQs

What is Jiu Jitsu / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / BJJ?

BJJ is a martial art focused on ground fighting and submission holds. Ground fighting generally consists of trying to off balance your training partner whilst maintaining some control of their posture until you can pin them in one of the various dominant pinning positions, then submissions are applied which generally constist of strangle holds and joint locks.

What is MMA / Mixed Martial Arts?
MMA combines various martial arts disciplines, including striking and grappling techniques such as Kickboxing, BJJ, Judo, and Wrestling. The general goal of combining different martial arts is to overlap the weakness of one discipline with the strength of another, improving your chances of success in a physical confrontation.
Is Jiu Jitsu / MMA safe??
Yes, when practiced under the guidance of a trained instructor and with appropriate safety measures, a participant can train for years without injury. Safety is of paramount importance at Clarity as we recognise life doesn’t wait for us whilst we’re injured, we want your training to uplift your life off the mats, not impede it.
Do I need any prior experience to start training?
Definitely NOT! Jiu Jitsu/MMA is accessible to all levels of experience and expertise, we pride ourselves at Clarity on being an amazing academy from which to start your training journey.
Do I need to be in shape to start training?
Definitely NOT! Jiu Jitsu/MMA can be adapted to any fitness level and will help improve your fitness over time, do not limit yourself by thinking you have to be an athlete before starting.
How often should I train?
This depends on your goals and schedule, but consistency is key. Beginners can start with 2-3 classes per week, increasing to 4+ sessions per week to reach an advanced skill level.
What should I wear to training?
For your first few classes any athletic attire is appropriate, preferably avoid clothing with zippers or other metal that could scratch. Once you’ve caught the bug you can start obtaining specialised training attire, which includes a jiu jitsu gi for gi classes, and no-gi attire is usually a rashguard on top and mma shorts/leggins on bottom.
What are the benefits of jiu jitsu/MMA?
Jiu jitsu/MMA offers physical, mental, and social benefits such as improved fitness, stress relief, self-defense skills, and a supportive community.
Will I get injured?
Like any sport, there is a risk of injury, but proper training techniques and safety measures can minimize that risk.
Can I train if I have a pre-existing injury?
It depends on the injury, but it's best to consult with your doctor and instructor to determine what is safe and appropriate for you. The beauty of Jiu Jitsu is that you can train at whatever pace allows you to work around any injuries you’re carrying.
Is jiu jitsu/MMA only for men?
No, jiu jitsu/MMA is for everyone regardless of gender or age.
Will I have to compete?
No, competition is optional and not required for training.
Will I be able to defend myself after training?
Yes, jiu jitsu/MMA can provide practical self-defense skills in real-life situations.
How do I progress through the belt/rank system?
Progress through the Clarity Jiu Jitsu curriculum requires consistent training, demonstration of technique proficiency, and performance in live sparring. There will not be specific grading events to gain degrees on your current belt ranking, however you will have to pass through a testing day in order to progress to each new belt ranking.
